Early Saturday morning, with the weather still cool, I ran errands with my 11-year-old retriever Heather riding shotgun.

I knew the Suzuki Forenza (or Fur-enza, as I call it) wagon was competitively priced (a tick over $16,000 with a good amount of basic safety and comfort options), and boasted decent fuel economy (21/30). I'd already played with the seats, and found them to drop flat easily, opening up a large cargo space for a small wagon. The Fur-enza's even a nice-looking if not head-turning vehicle. It has nice, clean lines accented in the deep blue of the wagon I was testing.

As a small wagon, it wasn't going to be hauling my side-by-side crates, but matched up against the Subaru Forester and other small wagons, the Fur-enza was coming out very competitive, with all the basics covered at a truly remarkable price. (One option I'd like to see: all-wheel or four-wheel drive, although The Forenza's front-wheel drive does help with the handling.)

And then I started to run my errands.

A couple hours later, I'd packed in:

  • 150 pounds of pet food and litter
  • a week's worth of groceries
  • six gallons of bottled water
  • two flats of bedding plants
  • a handful of one-gallon perennials
  • a couple of bags full of miscellaneous household junk from the hardware store
  • a bag of cat toys and . . .
  • a large, carpeted cat tree, four-feet-tall on a base 18 inches square.
  • With all of that cargo, Heather and I were not even feeling cramped, and there was still room for plenty more. If I'd taken Drew (seen in one of the pictures), I could have packed in twice the stuff.

At the neighborhood pet-supply store, the fellow asked me what I was driving. He loves cars and is always interested. He'd gotten a little gushy over past drivers such as a plush and powerful Range Rover, and as he helped load the food and litter into the Suzuki, he didn't seem that much impressed. But then he noted the roomy cargo area and asked how much.

When I told him, he quickly did the math. "You could buy five of these for the price of that Range Rover, and still have money left over for a vacation!" he said.

Yes, you could. And if you bought just one, you'd have enough money left over to support a family of four quite easily in most parts of the country. And still have a versatile, value-oriented and reliable car at the end of the day (with a transferable 100,000 mile, seven-year warranty.)

Oh honestly: Most of us -- me included -- can't even imagine dropping $76K on a car, so the Range Rover is something nice in theory only.

"I guess Suzuki's trying harder to make a good impression," he said, and I have to admit: It worked.

Carguy Comments: The Suzuki Forenza Wagon features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine producing 127 horsepower, for fuel mileage estimated at 22/30 (manual) and 21/30 (automatic). Designed by the world famous Pininfarina Design Studio of Italy, the Forenza wagon features 61.8 cubic feet of cargo space with rear seats folded down.

    Surprising Suzuki Forenza Wagon

Barking Lot Banter: The pocket-sized stature of the Suzuki Forenza wagon is a bit misleading. The economically-priced compact vehicle sports a surprisingly spacious interior, European styling and a posse of premium features, making it perfect for budget-conscious consumers. This Japanese automaker is turning heads (and tails) everywhere it rolls.

I have a 2007 Forenza that I bought brand new not even a year and a few months ago and it has problems. Front door handles have broken, seat belts latch had to be replaced.Stick shift worn out, now my egine light has come on and when I go in reverse it jumps. And all that, I only have 4300 miles. I am disapointed, a new car should have no problems.

I bought a 2007 forenza frash off the lot and after 2 weeks the car wouldn’t start. Went to the dealer and they said they fixed the problem, but one week after they “fixed” it, it happend again. YOu never know when it will do it or how long before it will be before it will actually crank. Sontimes its just 10 minutes sometime 20-30 minutes. Its a real problem amoung all forenzas I have found. Check out the link http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0daef4/0
Just read a few, I was suprised to see that many people were complaining of the same problems with the car.

Love my 2007 Suzuki Forenza. I miss having cruise but the MPG saving vs. my trooper is 100% worth the loss.

I recently purchases a Suzuki 2007 forenza with 21,000 miles. This is my first Suzuki and I am just looking for different reviews on it. Because my insurance is very high, they informed me that it has a least then average safety. Has anyone had any problems with suzuki forenza

We just bought our Suzuki Forenza last night so other than the dirve home, we don’t have much to comment on except that we wish it had cruse control. I have a Suzuki that we bought 5 years ago and did’t even replace the plugs on until it had 90,000 miles on it! It has been an excellant 4 wheel drive and if I had to replace it I would go to the same dealer and buy another just like it! And it still gets about 28 miles to the gal. driving to work! L.W.

We recently purchased a 2005 Suzuki Forenza Wagon with 55,000 miles on it for $7200.00 from a Suzuki dealer. This is our 4th Suzuki [Two Esteem wagons that we super reliable, a Suzuki Aerio SX AWD still in service] so we are hooked on them. I am so glad that the auto industry snubs Suzuki and people keep buying overpriced Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans! This allows Suzuki resale values to stay low so that we can buy them cheap and get years of trouble free service from them. T.F.
