When did DaimlerChrysler become such an innovative, value-oriented car company? I guess I just haven’t been paying much attention since I bought my Plymouth minivan — reliable, dull ol’ Forrest — a decade ago.

First, the Stow ‘N Go seats on the Dodge Caravan knocked my socks off, enabling a very comfortable minivan to go from hauling a soccer team to hauling a team of sled dogs in about the five minutes it takes to fold all the seats into the floor.

Then, I get the Jeep Compass Limited 4×4, the new “cute ute” from the venerable line of rugged off-roaders. Another winner from the DaimlerChrysler team! This one’s a great dogmobile, at fantastic price — starting below $16,000 for the two-wheel-drive version, the four-wheel-drive test vehicle I drove had just about everything (including heated seats) for less than $25,000.

What to like? Just about everything:

  • The seats fold easily, and completely flat.
  • The cargo area has rubber matting instead of carpet, making clean-up after dirty paws easy.
  • Fuel economy is a 26/30, better than most of the cute utes I’ve been driving.
  • Good cargo space, with not much of it unusable. As with most cute utes, my side-by-side crates won’t fit except in a “T” formation. Again, with smaller or fewer dogs — or those who use harness restraints– this isn’t an issue.
  • Well-placed cargo anchor hooks, and lots of them.
  • Good ground clearance and easy changeover to the four-wheel drive, both of which you’d expect in a Jeep, after all. This vehicle would have no problem handling the fields I’m often training in.

The only dog-related complaint? The cup holders are down low between the front seats, easy for a dog to put a foot in (or a tongue, in the case of my youngest retriever, McKenzie, who loves lattes.)

Aside from the doggie aspects, this little SUV is fun to drive and very responsive. It’s a pretty darn cute, too. The design of the front reminds me of a cross between the Jeep Liberty and the Dodge Nitro. I guess they were aiming for a more masculine look than the Liberty, and the compromise is a good one. The heated seats are awesome, which was a surprise considering the ones in the Dodge Grand Caravan were wimpy.

The Jeep Compass would be a great dogmobile even at a higher price. But at less than $25,000 as tested with almost all the options, good fuel economy and four-wheel drive, it’s definitely one of the best value-oriented dogmobiles I’ve driven.

Carguy Comments:The Jeep Compass is a new compact entry to the rugged Jeep brand. It combines the functionality of an SUV at the price of a small car or pickup truck. The 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter World Engine, a joint venture with Chrysler, Hyundai and Mitsubishi, gets 26/30 mpg. Cargo capacity is 60.7 cubic feet and is emission rated as a ULEV II vehicle.

I have a Jeep Compass 2009 and except for the gas mileage I am pretty disappointed. We have three German Shepherds, can’t fit ANY kennel or crate into the back of that car, it gets tough to fit the training gear plus the dogs into the car. However, it is easy and lots of fun to drive. We should have definitely went for the Patriot in the first place.

I have a bullmastiff, and my son lives 2hrs away in orlando,so we put her seat belt harness on her,and hook it to a lead thats hooked to a heavey cargo tie down.oh yea and a blanket on the rear bench seat!I’ve had my 2007 compass 2yrs now,and I’ve had no problems at all,now if I had a mastiff i think i’d look at the element, the compass was much cheaper!

I took crates down to the dealer to see how they fit. Having been a Jeep fan for many years and having great long term success with five different Jeeps I wanted to see if one would make a good work only vehicle. The Patriot does fit crates much better and otherwise is similar to the Compass. Both small and get great mileage for what they can carry. Has just about as much space as my old square Cherokee. Not sure if I would get 300k out of the little motor like the straight sixes in the older Jeeps.
My big dilemma is that I have a family and they like to go to shows and events with me and we like to take the dogs out with us to the beach, park, camping, upstate or on vacation. The compact ute would be a second vehicle next to my behemoth full-size.

I chekcked out the Jeep line of SUV’s and was very disappointed in the large crevases between the folded seats that would break a dog’s leg. I definately turned away from these for this issue.

the compass is very good but the honda element is better

my sister just purchased a 08 compass we have a 60# lab, while it seems like a small vehicle, you get exceptional headroom and overall size inside. This vehicle was passing stopped vehicles on PA rt 81 in snow this winter. It moves very nicely, excellent turning as well.

Have to admit that I also own a Patriot… I can put 3 medium crates (Precision 3000 series) easily with the rest of the show gear. The patriot definitely should be on this list

Hate to admit it, but we own a Patriot. It should be on this list, as our two Mastiffs would testify.

Funny, I was set on buying a Compass precisely because I need cargo space to haul two dog crates to shows. I had to laugh when I read this review, written from a “dog’s” perspective. Thanks for the smiles! (and comfort that the Compass I bought two days ago is going to work out well!).

Thank you for you input. We are considering buying the Patriate but I have been told that it is pretty much the same as the Compass except that the cargo space is more squared off and so the crates should be able to fit closer to the back tail gate. My husband spotted that one. Can’t question the kennels help when it comes to packing up the car.
